No Magic Wand book cover: a broken wooden wand splintering above a locked golden book under a starry night sky

What works?

A few protocols have comparative effects.

Many brands have a poster.

Families are handed the poster.

❦

One engine · One rule

A claim earns its keep only if…

I

the child is safer,

II

the bond is more usable,

III

the adult is still present,

IV

and the harm was counted.

“Readers who want a wand will be disappointed. Readers who want the sentence a supervisor can defend in a staffing, a court report, or an IEP meeting will find the sentence.”

The numbers that held

Anchor Estimates

Where a published synthesis reported a number, the article carries that number. Where it did not, the article says the question is open.

g = 0

Pediatric PTSD

Trauma-focused CBT vs. passive control across 70 randomized trials and 5,528 patients. Versus active control, g = 0.55.

g = 0

Parental Burnout

15 studies, N = 1,380 — and maintained at g = −0.99 up to three months. Treat the adult and the room changes.

OR 0

Kinship Care

Placement disruption across 102 studies and 666,615 children. Behavior SMD −0.33.

g = 0

DBT-A & Self-Harm

Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents on self-harm. Suicidal ideation g = −0.31.

g = 0

Telehealth

Video vs. in-person: no difference. Versus waitlist, g = −1.26. A waitlist is not a neutral zero.

The Eight Gates

Every article passes through the same eight gates. A title that could not pass a gate was written as a gap — and a gap is not a zero.

  1. One population, one contrast, one primary outcome.
  2. Peer-reviewed trials and syntheses preferred.
  3. Randomized or adjusted designs for an efficacy claim.
  4. Extract effect, sample, follow-up, fidelity, harm, and caregiver dose.
  5. A published pool outranks a signal. A signal outranks a slogan.
  6. No invented hedges. Blinded and unblinded outcomes are not averaged.
  7. Name the moderator that would change the result.
  8. End with a decision: stop, start, or test.

Inside the book

Seventy-Five Evidence Articles

About the Authors

Not theorists watching the wreckage
from a safe distance.

A trauma-informed duo rewriting what we thought we knew about child psychology, developmental trauma, and the hidden codes driving human behavior. More than three decades inside the rooms where attachment either holds or snaps — residential treatment, forensic psychology, therapeutic foster care, clinical leadership, the classroom, and their own home.

FES

Dr. Franklin Edward Shoemaker

PhD, LMHC-QS

Practitioner-scholar. Code breaker. Father who did not get a spectator seat.

Forged by 34 years in the trenches, beginning in 1992 — residential treatment, forensic psychology, therapeutic foster care, clinical leadership, and trauma-responsive education. A Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Qualified Supervisor, Nationally Certified TF-CBT clinician, Nationally Accredited Adoption Clinician, and attachment-focused clinician through TAC–C.A.S.E. and ATTACh.

His 2016 doctoral dissertation asked a question the field still dodges: what is the relationship between child maltreatment and the severity of attachment difficulties in children ages five and older? It became the spine of a publishing life. Founder, president, and CEO of Elevating Trauma to Trust, and Chairman of the School Advisory Council at Medulla Elementary School in Lakeland, Florida.

Tonya A. Sharrett-Shoemaker

MA

Award-winning educator. Counselor. The translator who turns neuroscience into something a family can actually use on a Tuesday.

34-plus years of classroom leadership, child-psychology expertise, and family-systems healing. She holds a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and is a Florida Certified Professional Educator with endorsements in Exceptional Student Education (K–12), Elementary Education, and ESOL. In 2024 she was named Teacher of the Year at Medulla Elementary School.

She is the reason the work does not stay locked inside a clinic. Complex neuroscience becomes a strategy a teacher can run before the bell, a parent can hold through a meltdown, and a child can feel in the body before the words arrive. Originally from Circleville, Ohio, she has stood beside Dr. Shoemaker for 38 years.

Together

A closed circuit: clinical fire and classroom precision, forensic clarity and family-systems mercy, the dissertation and the Tuesday morning lesson plan. Adoptive parents and former therapeutic foster parents, they raised an adopted daughter with reactive attachment difficulties and two sons with attachment difficulties, and they are now grandparents to seven.

“The books are not written from a conference stage. They are written from the kitchen table after the night the code snapped again — and from the morning it held.”
